About this Spot
Medlands Beach is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on the east coast of Great Barrier Island. Also known as Oruawharo Bay, this spot is about 2.1 kilometers long and features a sandy bottom. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Surfing here is possible at all tides, and the spot is known for consistent surf conditions. The southern end of the beach is called Shark Alley, where you can find a powerful right-hander with steep drop-ins and hollow barrels. The spot is best suited for intermediate surfers, with wave lengths ranging from 50 to 150 meters. The beach is usually empty, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets crowded. Strong rips and undertow can be present, so it’s important to surf with a buddy and be aware of the currents. Sharks have been reported in the area, so stay alert in the water. Before paddling out, check your skills to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. To get to Medlands Beach, you need to travel to Great Barrier Island by boat or plane, then drive about 15 minutes from Tryphena Harbour. There is a Department of Conservation campsite at the southern end, set among trees and near a tidal stream.
