Overview
About this Spot
Karioitahi is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on the west coast of the North Island, about 8 kilometers southwest of Waiuku. The beach features black sand and a rugged coastline, with access via Karioitahi Beach Road from Constable Rd. The spot is known for its sand bottom and can be surfed at all tides. Surfing conditions are inconsistent, and the waves can be strong and challenging, with the best surf when a southwest swell meets an offshore wind from the east. The spot provides both left and right waves. There are many sand banks along the beach, each offering different types of waves, and the length of ride is usually less than 50 meters. The surf spot is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers. Rips and undertow are common, so always check the surf report and forecast before heading out. The area is known for strong currents, and there have been reports of sharks, so respect the ocean and stay alert. The beach is private, and localism can be present, especially when the spot is crowded, so respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. The crowd is usually light, but it’s important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Vehicles are allowed on the beach with a permit, and a 4×4 is recommended for driving on the sand. The Kariaotahi Surf Life Saving Club provides lifeguard patrols during the summer months. Other activities at the beach include fishing, horse riding, off-road motorcycling, and paragliding. Nearby surf spots include Skimps, Whatipu, Karekare, Piha, and Whites Beach. For more details, check the surf map, webcam, and local forecast before your session.
