Quizala is a surf spot located in Northwest, Nicaragua, in the municipality of San Rafael del Sur, within the Managua Department. The beach is about an hour’s drive from Managua, accessible via the León Viejo highway and a rural road marked ‘Costa Azul.’ Quizala is a beach break with a sandy bottom and works on all tides. The spot provides both left and right waves. The surf is regular, with wave heights typically ranging from 3 to 5 feet, often reaching 6 feet or more, and on big swells, waves can get up to 8-10 feet. The right breaks closer to the river mouth and can run for 200-300 yards, while the left can be just as long on bigger days. The length of the ride is usually between 150 and 300 meters. Quizala is suitable for all levels of surfers, but it is important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The spot is not usually crowded, but when there are more surfers in the water, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. The best season for surfing here is from January to May, when the wind is offshore most of the day and there is little or no rain. The area is remote, with few facilities, so bring your own food, drinks, and gear, as the nearest store is about 20 minutes away. There are summer houses near the beach, and camping is possible. The natural estuary Los Cajones is nearby, but its use is not recommended due to pollution. The main access is by private vehicle, as public transport is limited.
