About this Spot
Raul is a surf spot located in Baja North, Mexico, near the town of Puerto Nuevo. To get there, take the toll road south, exit at Puerto Nuevo, and look for Raul’s restaurant with a surfboard at the entrance. Go down the street and you will find several entry points, with the option to pay a small fee to park securely on the bluff overlooking the water. There is also the possibility to camp on the bluff for an additional fee. The spot features a rocky bottom and is best surfed at medium to high tide. The waves at Raul are suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers, and it is not recommended for beginners. Boards commonly used here include shortboards, mid and retro boards, and longboards on smaller days. The spot provides both left and right waves. The length of the ride is usually between 50 and 150 meters. The surf is regular and the crowd is moderate, but the atmosphere is generally relaxed, with no strong local presence. Still, when the spot is crowded, respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. Hazards include rocks and sea urchins, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The best swell direction is from the south and southwest, with a minimum swell height of 2 feet needed for good waves. The best wind direction is from the north and northeast. Raul is sheltered by cliffs, which can help when winds affect other nearby spots. Nearby surf spots include Las Gaviotas, K38, Teresitas, Calafia, and Mushrooms. Raul is a good option if you want to avoid the crowds often found at other northern Baja surf spots.
