Overview
About this Spot
Calafia is a surf spot located in Baja North, Mexico. This spot is known for its long right-hand waves that work at all tides and can handle a lot of swell, with northwest being the best direction. The waves start on a reef, and if you make the inside connection, you can ride the wave for about 300 meters to a nice sandy beach. The bay is fairly tight, making it easy to paddle across, and you can take lefts on the south reef if the conditions are right. However, the spot may close out if there are southern and northern swells. The waves are powerful, and stand-up tubes are possible. The spot offers great potential for waves and size, and you can enjoy a gorgeous view from the water. When the sets are less frequent, you might hear Mariachi music drifting over the water from a nearby restaurant. To get there, take highway 1 towards Ensenada, and it’s located at kilometer 35. Drive south past Mushrooms, park, pay, and lock your car. Make your way down the cliff on a well-worn footpath and time your paddle out carefully. The paddle can take more than 20 minutes, or you can use a boat. The wave direction is right, and the bottom is a coral reef. The spot is considered a regional classic and is suitable for intermediate surfers. The frequency of waves is regular, and the length is less than 50 meters. The crowd is usually empty. Nearby spots include Mushrooms, Teresitas, K38, Las Gaviotas, and Raul. Ensenada, a major city in Baja California, is nearby and is known for its warm climate and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. It’s important to check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded and to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals.
