About this Spot

South Bondi is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia, in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, about 7 kilometers east of the city center. The spot sits at the southern end of Bondi Beach, which is known for its concrete promenade and busy beach scene. South Bondi is not suitable for beginners; if you are just starting out, the northern part of Bondi Beach is usually more beginner-friendly. The spot is best for intermediate and experienced surfers. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks, and you can surf here at all tides. The spot is often crowded, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. The spot provides both left and right waves. Boards like shortboards, mid-lengths, and retro shapes are commonly used here. The wave length is usually less than 50 meters. Swell comes in best from the east, southeast, and south, with a minimum swell height of about 2 feet needed for decent waves. The best wind direction is from the west, northwest, or north. South Bondi has a regular surf frequency, but the waves can be challenging, especially with the strong rips in the area, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your level. Pollution can sometimes be an issue, and there are occasional sightings of sharks, so stay alert. The spot is easy to reach by car, bus, or train, just head east to the beach. Nearby surf spots include Bondi Beach, North Bondi, The Boot, Tamarama, and Tama Reef.
