About this Spot

Coogee Reef is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia. This spot is known for its challenging waves that generally break well when there is a solid groundswell of 8 feet or more. The reef is situated at the southern end of Coogee Beach, near the surf club, and is characterized by a coral reef and sand bottom. The wave direction is predominantly right, making it suitable for intermediate surfers. The spot is not frequently crowded, providing a more relaxed surfing experience. Coogee Reef features both an inside break, known as “Inners,” which is typically more suitable for bodyboarding due to its sucky nature, and an outside break, “Outers,” which offers a powerful wave that can turn into a long ride. On a good day, the take-off section may barrel, providing opportunities for turns before the wave closes out at the shorebreak. For experienced surfers, the Bombie off the northern point and Wedding Cake Island during big swells are notable challenges. The reef does not break often, making it a good option when other spots in the area are too big. Surfers should check their skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match their level. Respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots. Remember to use the surf forecast, report, map, and webcam to plan your session effectively.
