Overview
About this Spot
Ollie´s Point is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, inside Santa Rosa National Park near the Nicaraguan border. Also known as Potrero Grande, this spot is a right-hand point break with long, fast waves that can reach up to 300 meters in length. The wave breaks over a mix of rocks and sand, with a narrow take-off zone close to the rocks, and is best surfed at low to medium tide. Access is only by boat, usually from Playa del Coco or Playa Ocotal, as there is no road leading to the spot. The area is remote and camping on land is not allowed. The wave is not very hollow but has quick sections and inside parts that can be challenging. The spot is recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers due to the speed, length, and rocky bottom. Beginners should avoid this spot. Boards like shortboards, mid-lengths, and retro boards are commonly used here. The spot can get crowded, especially in the afternoon when tour boats arrive, so it’s important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. Always check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The best surf forecast for Ollie’s Point is with a south, southwest, or west swell, a minimum swell height of 3 feet, and wind coming from the north or northeast. The spot is close to other surf locations like Laverinto, Scardog Reef, Roca Bruja, Tamarindo, and Playa Remanso. The area is protected, and boats are supposed to have permits for access. The spot gained international attention after being featured in the film “Endless Summer II.”
