About this Spot

Shichirigahama is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, along the Sagami Bay coastline in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The beach stretches for about 2.9 kilometers and is known for its dark sand, which is rich in iron ore. The spot is situated between Koyurugimisaki Cape near Fujisawa and Inamuragasaki Cape west of Kamakura. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom is a mix of coral reef and sand, and the best surf conditions are usually at medium to high tide. Swell needs to be at least 1.5 meters for the spot to work well, and it is important to check the surf forecast and report before heading out. The spot is consistent, but wind from the west at over 2m/s can blow out the waves, so dawn patrol is recommended to catch clean conditions. Rips and undertow are present, and there are rocks in the area, so always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The crowd is usually light, but it gets busy when the waves are waist high. When the surf gets to shoulder or head high, the number of surfers in the water drops. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. Parking is available in several places, including a lot that opens at 6:00am in summer and after 8:00am in the off season. Short-term parking is possible at 7-11 or in a private lot next to it, but be careful about time limits. The spot is accessible by train via the Enoden line, getting off at Kamakura Koukou Mae station. The water is less clean most of the year, but better in winter. You can surf in boardshorts until October, but a long rash guard is recommended due to jellyfish. The beach has faced erosion issues in recent years, affecting its width and some local infrastructure. For more details, check the surf map, webcam, and local forecast before your session.
